So after visiting the Arlington National Cemetery, I made my way over to Georgetown. I wanted to visit Georgetown Cupcake, because we all know I’m a connoisseur of all things cupcake. (This is the original bakery from a show on TLC called D.C. Cupcakes.)
When I got there, the line was out the door and all the way up the side street. This is proof it’s a good place, right?
I had read online that every day they put out a secret cupcake via social media… and if you mentioned the name of this cupcake, you would get it for free. However I was down to about 1% on my phone and I still had to Uber back to DC.
Three individuals got in line behind me. One lady and two gentlemen… Around the age of 23 I would say. I made eye contact with one of the guys and smiled. Then in Kim’s fashion, asked them if they had ever heard of the secret cupcake of the day? They all turned to me, and the gentleman that I had initially engaged with, said “no”. I proceeded to tell them that if you knew the cupcake of the day, from social media, you would get it for free and that my phone was on 1% and I didn’t have the power to look it up. I turned back around and continued to wait in line.
Finally, I had made it inside the store. One of the gentleman behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said I know the cupcake. I responded excited… Asking him if he found it on Instagram. He said yes. He proceeded to tell me that it was the Blue Birthday Cupcake. He asked me if I would try to get the free cupcake because he was nervous to ask. I said that I was not afraid to ask at all… And if I turned around and nodded my head at him that meant that it worked.
This place was bustling. Behind this very small counter was probably 17 employees working at lightning speed. I finally got to the place where I could place my order. I looked at the young lady who was about 19 years old standing behind the counter and asked her this simple question “does it mean anything to you if I say Blue Birthday Cupcake?” She smiled at me and said, “yes it does, how many do you want?” I was shocked that she simply said, “how many do you want?” So I’m guessing if you come in there, even by yourself, you could get as many free cupcakes as you want? I’m sure that’s not true, but we can all dream, right? I responded that I just wanted one of the free. (Trust me, this girl was gonna try others.) She turned around to the gentleman behind her and said, “she mentioned the cupcake.” From one of the rows of cupcakes he pulled out the Blue Birthday Cupcake. I turned to my new friends behind me and simply nodded my head! I ordered two other flavors and proceeded to leave the bakery.
While I was standing outside trying to figure out which direction I was going to go next, my new friends came out from the bakery. The gentleman quickly ran to my side and tapped me on the shoulder and said, “thank you so much… We got three of those for free.” I told him no problem. The key to the story is simply this… If you’re traveling to a city and you know there are specific places that you want to eat, connect to those places via social media and figure out what’s the scoop!
Note: Blue Birthday Cupcake is just like it sounds- Birthday Cake Cupcake with blue frosting.
Lesson: The best things in life are free!
